7 Ways Students Can Use Canva for School Projects

Most students use Canva to make a poster and stop there. But Canva is a full creative suite covering dozens of formats. Here are seven ways students can use it for school projects — and why each one builds a different skill set.

1. Infographic

Turning research into an infographic forces students to distill complex information into its essential points — a high-order thinking task disguised as a design project. Canva has over 500 infographic templates covering timelines, comparison charts, process diagrams and statistical summaries. The process of deciding what to include (and what to cut) often deepens understanding more than writing an essay does.

2. Presentation

Canva's presentation editor competes directly with PowerPoint and Google Slides. Templates are more visually polished than default slide themes, and the Presenter View (with speaker notes) works exactly like a professional presentation tool. Students can also record themselves presenting — the recording syncs with the slides — and share a link instead of presenting live, which suits introverted students.

3. Short-form Video

Canva's video editor lets students cut clips, add animated text, record voiceover and add background music — all without leaving the browser. A 60 to 90 second explainer video on any topic is an excellent differentiation task: it requires understanding deep enough to explain simply, and production skills that engage students who struggle with written work.

4. Newsletter or Magazine

Students designing a class newspaper or subject-specific magazine choose layout, write copy, edit images and make editorial decisions — a genuinely cross-curricular project. Canva's magazine and newsletter templates produce print-ready PDFs or interactive digital publications. Works especially well in English Language Arts, Media Studies and Social Studies.

5. Research Poster

Academic posters are used in science fairs, university conferences and professional presentations. Teaching students to create a research poster — with a clear question, methodology, findings and conclusion — within a constrained visual space is excellent preparation for further education. Canva's A0 and A1 poster templates handle the sizing automatically.

6. Digital Book or Storybook

Students writing their own illustrated stories can lay out pages in Canva's book templates — adding illustrations (drawn in Canva or uploaded), handwritten-style fonts and custom covers. Export as PDF and share, or upload to Flipsnack to create a page-turning digital flipbook. Works from primary through to secondary level for very different types of writing.

7. Resume / CV (Years 10–13)

Older students benefit from creating a professional resume early. Canva has dozens of CV templates that look far better than a Word document default. The process prompts students to reflect on their skills, achievements and experiences — valuable beyond the design itself.
