Canva and Adobe Express (formerly Adobe Spark) are the two most popular free graphic design tools for educators. Both let you create posters, presentations, social media graphics, infographics and videos in a browser. But they are not identical — here is how they compare for classroom use.
Canva wins on sheer volume. Over one million templates cover every format imaginable — lesson plans, worksheets, class posters, social posts, presentations, certificates and more. The template quality varies, but the range is unmatched.
Adobe Express has fewer templates but they tend to be more on-trend visually. Express is particularly strong for social media content and short promotional videos. For educational resources specifically, Canva's library is more relevant.
Both tools use drag-and-drop editors and are accessible to non-designers. Canva's interface is slightly more intuitive for first-time users — the element panels and layer system are easy to discover. Adobe Express is clean but some features (particularly video editing) are buried in less obvious menus.
| Canva Free | Adobe Express Free | |
|---|---|---|
| Templates | 250,000+ | thousands |
| Storage | 5 GB | 2 GB |
| Brand kit | 1 (limited) | 1 |
| Background remover | ✗ (Pro only) | ✓ (free) |
| Video export | ✓ (watermark-free) | ✓ (watermark-free) |
| Collaboration | ✓ real-time | ✓ basic |
| Education plan | ✓ fully free | ✓ fully free |
Both tools offer free education plans that unlock premium features for verified teachers and students. The verification process takes 24–48 hours for both.
For most teachers and K-12 students, Canva for Education is the better choice — it is more intuitive, has more relevant templates and the classroom management features are genuinely useful. Apply for the education plan immediately.
If you teach design, media or marketing courses to older students, Adobe Express makes more sense — its creative tools are more sophisticated and it connects to the broader Adobe ecosystem students may use professionally.
There is no reason you cannot use both. Many teachers use Canva for daily resource creation and Adobe Express for video projects.
