How to Create and Publish an E-Book Online for Free

Creating an e-book is one of the most effective ways to share expertise, support student learning and build an online audience. With the right tools, you can produce a professional-looking e-book without any graphic design or coding skills — and without spending a cent.

Step 1 — Plan your e-book

Before opening any tool, sketch an outline:

• Topic: What specific problem does your e-book solve or what topic does it cover?
• Length: A practical guide is typically 15–50 pages. Do not aim for a long book — aim for a complete one.
• Audience: Write for one specific reader, not everyone. The more specific your audience, the more useful the book.
• Format: Will it be PDF (most versatile), ePub (best for e-readers) or both?

Step 2 — Write the content

Write in Google Docs or Microsoft Word first — separate your writing from your design. Writing in a design tool causes most people to spend too much time on how it looks before they have finished what it says.

Venngage specialises in visually rich documents — infographics, reports and e-books. Free plan includes five designs. Templates are particularly good for data-heavy content: charts, comparison tables and step-by-step guides.

Step 4 — Export your e-book

• PDF: the safest format — opens everywhere, preserves your layout exactly, easy to email and share.
• ePub: flows to fit any screen size; required by Amazon Kindle. Canva does not export ePub — use Calibre (free, desktop app) to convert a Word doc to ePub.

Step 5 — Publish and distribute

• Share as a PDF link: upload to Google Drive and share the link — simplest option for classroom use.
• Flipbook: upload to Flipsnack or Issuu to create a page-turning reading experience.
• Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP): free to publish. KDP accepts Word and ePub files. You earn 35–70% royalties on each sale. Great for reaching a wider audience.
• Your website: offer the PDF as a free download in exchange for an email address — this is how most creators build an email list.
• Teachers Pay Teachers: teachers can sell resource packs and e-books to other teachers.

Tips for a professional-looking e-book

• Use two fonts maximum — one for headings, one for body text.
• Leave white space — a dense page of text is intimidating. Use short paragraphs and plenty of margin.
• Add a table of contents with clickable links (easy in Canva and Word).
• Include a cover page, author bio and a clear "next steps" section at the end.
