How to Run a Live Classroom Poll or Survey in 5 Minutes

Jun 21, 2026  ·  19 views  ·  ~3 min read

Live polls transform a passive audience into active participants. Students vote, respond and see their collective input appear on the screen instantly — making abstract topics concrete and giving every student a voice, including the quiet ones who rarely raise their hand. Here is how to set one up in minutes.

Why use live polls?

Mentimeter

Mentimeter is the most polished live polling tool. Create a presentation with slides — each slide is a different interaction type: multiple choice, word cloud, open text, ranking, scales or a quiz. Students join at menti.com with a six-digit code — no account or app needed. Results animate in real time on the projected slide.

The free plan allows two "questions" per presentation (two interactive slides per session). This is enough for a quick check-in. For unlimited slides, the paid plan is $11.99/month but is often available to schools through bulk licensing.

How to set up Mentimeter in 5 minutes:

  1. Create a free account at mentimeter.com.
  2. Click New presentation and add a slide.
  3. Choose your question type: Multiple Choice for a quick check, Word Cloud for brainstorming, Open Ended for free text responses.
  4. Type your question and answer options.
  5. Click Present and show the slide full-screen.
  6. Students visit menti.com and enter the code shown on screen.
  7. Watch responses appear live.

Slido

Slido is used primarily for Q&A and audience questions. Participants submit questions and upvote each other's — the most popular questions rise to the top. Teachers use it to manage large-group discussions or to collect questions asynchronously before a live session. Free for basic Q&A with up to 100 participants per event.

Poll Everywhere

Poll Everywhere is the original audience response system, now browser-based. Free for up to 40 respondents per poll — sufficient for most classrooms. Participants respond via web browser or SMS text message (useful when WiFi is unreliable). Results can be embedded live into PowerPoint or Google Slides presentations, which means you never have to switch windows.

Kahoot! polls

Most teachers know Kahoot! as a quiz tool, but it also has a "Poll" mode where there is no right or wrong answer — just opinions. Use this when you want the energy and engagement of Kahoot! without the pressure of being scored. Completely free.
