Best Free Animation and Video Creation Tools for the Classroom

Video creation used to require expensive software and hours of editing. Today's free browser-based tools let teachers produce animated explainers and let students create their own videos as a way to demonstrate learning. Here are the best options.

Powtoon

Powtoon is the most popular animated video tool for education. Its drag-and-drop editor includes animated characters, scene transitions, voiceover recording and background music. The free plan allows videos up to three minutes long with a Powtoon watermark. Export directly to YouTube or download as MP4. Best for: explainer videos, lesson introductions and student presentations.

Animaker

Animaker offers a wider range of animation styles than Powtoon — including 2D characters, infographic animation and whiteboard-style drawing animations. The free plan is fairly generous, though exports include a watermark. The character creator lets students design an avatar that resembles them, which increases engagement significantly.

Canva Video

Canva's video editor is included in the free plan and has grown substantially. Teachers can cut clips, add transitions, animate text and record voiceovers — all without leaving Canva. Its library of free stock video clips and audio tracks covers most classroom needs. The Canva for Education plan removes all restrictions for verified teachers.

Pixton

Pixton is specifically designed for creating comics and graphic novels. Students choose characters, backgrounds and speech bubbles to tell stories — a highly effective format for English Language Arts, history narratives and social-emotional learning scenarios. Free plan available with basic features.

Flip (formerly Flipgrid)

Flip lets students record short video responses to teacher prompts. It is less about production and more about authentic communication — students film themselves explaining a concept, demonstrating a skill or responding to a question. Free for educators. Excellent for speaking and listening assessment.

Biteable

Biteable uses pre-built scenes that you customise with your own text, colours and footage. The free plan produces videos up to one minute long. Best for school announcements, quick explainers and infographic-style content.

Renderforest

Renderforest offers slide-show videos, logo animations, whiteboard animations and promotional videos through a template-based system. The free plan limits resolution to 360p, but this is adequate for classroom screens and LMS uploads.
